Bahr Dar City Water and Sewerage Service Office is organized in one main office and 4 branch offices to be able to provide drinking water and sewage services to the urban and rural residents under the city administration. By deploying a total of 551 workers, it produces 15 million cubic meters of water from 28 water facilities and distributes it through 6 water storage and distribution tanks to make the service accessible to 422,969 residents of Bahir Dar city under the city administration.

The main purpose of the institution

The primary purpose of the Bahir Dar Water and Sewerage Service is to take over and manage water and sewerage infrastructure projects that have been constructed by the government or other donors. The aim is to provide a reliable water supply and sewerage services to the city of Bahir Dar by performing post-construction management, as well as operational and maintenance tasks.

Recent history from 2003-2023
This period includes the period from the time the water service was declared to be self-funded and managed by the Employer and Employee Proclamation to the present. Currently, it is an institution organized in one main office and 4 branch offices, employing 408 permanent employees, 73 outsourced security personnel, and 70 plumber assistants, totaling 551 manpower, producing 15 million cubic meters of water from 28 water facilities.
2002
Medieval history from 1980-2002
This period includes the establishment of the water service as an independent office, initially under the District Office and later under the Urban Development and Water Resources Offices. The water department became independent from the municipality in 1980. At this time, it had approximately 25 operational and support staff.
1979
Early history from 1960-1979
The construction of the drinking water supply project at that time was carried out with technical support from the German government. The drinking water project construction included an intake structure, a raw water pumping engine, water treatment tanks, a chemical addition unit, a 200 m3 purified water storage tank, 13 water pumps, and distribution lines.

History from 1959 onwards
This period includes the time when the water service was called and managed by the Municipality Water Department. The water service was established in 1959 and was managed by the Municipality Water Department. The first water used for drinking water in Bahir Dar was Lake Tana.
