Securing Bahir Dar’s City Water Future: A Collaborative Step towards Climate Resilience

Securing Bahir Dar’s City Water Future: A Collaborative Step towards Climate Resilience
We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of a pivotal workshop held from November 6-9, 2025, in Addis Ababa. The Bahir Dar Water and Sewerage Services Organization, in a strategic partnership with Vitens Evides international (Dutch Water Operators), brought together twenty-two participants from stakeholder organizations to forge a path toward sustainable water services.
Our Mission: To protect the vital three spring sources—Areque, Lomi, and Tikur Weha—that supply 400 liters per second clean water to Bahir Dar city. This collaborative effort focuses on building climate-resilient systems to guard against catchment degradation and ensure a sustainable, uncontaminated water supply for generations to come.
Key Highlights from the Workshop:
✅ An insightful presentation by Dr. Atinkut Girma and expert researchers on integrated watershed management, emphasizing community involvement, stakeholders engagement and global best practices.
✅ A firm commitment from our General Manager, Mr. Yirga Alemu, to embed source protection and climate resilience into the core of our strategic plan.
✅ The formation of a dedicated 7-institution committee to champion and coordinate climate-based watershed management efforts.
This marks a significant shift from routine operations to a forward-thinking, collaborative model. Together with our partners and the community, we are building a resilient water future for Bahir Dar City.
